 Tradition and victories

In 1904, at the 4th of May, some men gathered in Gelsenkirchen to found a new football club. They named it after a district and the year of foundation.
This was the birth of the FC Schalke 04.
  • 7x German champion (1934, 1935, 1937, 1939, 1940, 1942, 1958)
  • 4x German cup winner (1937, 1972, 2001, 2002)
  • 1x winner of the UEFA Cup (1997)
That is the list of victories of the King Blue.
They were quickly called "Knappen" because the team played in the Ruhr district, a centre of coal mining. In the great era before World War II, the "Schalker Kreisel" was very successful. Fritz Szepan and Ernst Kuzorra were the heroes on the Glückauf-Kampfbahn. The Bundesliga scandal in the 1970s hurt the image of the Gelsenkirchen club, but as all supporters know "the FC Schalke will never perish" (another line from a song).

So the former chaos club became one of the most successful German clubs of the present. The highlight was May 21th, 1997 when the Euro-Fighters won the UEFA Cup against Inter Mailand. "We beat Roda, we beat Trabzon, we won against Brügge anyway, Valencia, Teneriffa, Inter Mailand, that was a show!" (Schalke's UEFA Cup chant). S04 impresses Europe in this year.

One of the most tragic events took place in the last second of the 34th matchday of the Bundesliga season 2000/01. Schalke had just beaten Unterhaching with 5:3 and advanced to the top of the ranking, but the match Bayern vs. Hamburg was not yet over and then there was this free kick, which snatched the title away from Schalke after four minutes. Schalke did not win the title, but was called "champion of hearts". The successful coach Huub Stevens, who had the longest tenure with six years at Schalke, won the German cup twice with his guys.

The dedication of the Arena AufSchalke, the most modern stadium in Europe, in August 2001 was a further milestone in the history of Schalke. More information about the cult place can be seen below.

All this belongs to the tradition of the FC Schalke 04, which is more than a club for the supporters: Schalke is a religion!
More detailed texts about the history of the traditional club are collected at the page Mythos Schalke and on the jubilee website "100 Schalker Jahre".

 Veltins-Arena
(formerly known as Arena AufSchalke)

Veltins-Arena (formerly known as Arena AufSchalke) The most modern stadium in Europa is situated in Gelsenkirchen. The Arena sets new standards. After the Glückauf-Kampfbahn (dedicated on Augst 25, 1928) and the Park Stadium (August 4th, 1973) it is the third home of the FC Schalke 04. "A new home for the tradition" - the motto of the king-blue cult place shows how closely tradition and modernity are connected at Schalke. Everyone who once experiences the Arena at a live event, immediately feels the extraordinary fascination of this place. With the webcam you can take a look into the Arena. But why is the Arena so special? Read some special information now.
Most of the information, especially the statistical data, are taken from the "Zeitung AufSchalke" (No. 1, November 1998).
  • Multifunctionality - football with the FC Schalke 04 is always played here of course. But the arena is not only appropriate for football. All kinds of events are possible: sports, concerts or congresses.
  • Ceiling - In the Arena, only the opponents will get wet. All events are independent of the weather. If the weather is bad, the sliding roof with a weight of 560 tons can be closed within 30 minutes.
  • Lawn - The green underground is only inside the Arena when a football match is scheduled. All the other time it is outside in front of the building where sun, wind and rain guarantee an optimal care. For this purpose the lawn which lies in a bowl of concrete (total weight 11.000 tons) can be driven outside within six hours.
  • Video cube - A large video cube which hangs in the middle above the field replaces the old fashioned display panel and offers a multimedia experience. Four displays (each 35 square meters) guarantee that every supporter can watch the highlights.
  • privately financed - In contrast to most of the other new stadiums, the Arena AufSchalke was constructed without any financial support of the government. The total expense of 358 million DM (German Mark) were financed by the private economy.
  • Bricks in the "Tausend-Freunde-Mauer" (wall of thousand friends) - The supporters played an important role during the construction of the Arena. They could support the projects by buying a "Baustein" (brick) for 500 DM (250 €). The club returns the loan with coupons for the S04-Fanshop. Furthermore every holder of a brick gets his personal inscription at the Tausend-Freunde-Mauer in front of the Arena.
  • AufSchalke - The importance of the tradition was corroborated by the name of the Arena. Instead of selling the rights to a sponsor, the new home was called Arena AufSchalke. The supporters are used to going to Schalke since 1904. Nevertheless the Arena got the name of a sponsor (a brewery) in July 2005.
  • Atmosphere - 62,000 spectators in the sold-out Arena create a sensational atmosphere which cannot be found in any other stadium. The opponents are intimidated. Schalke is alive!
