MSchnitzler2000 Volleyball - European cups
You have to exceed sporty limits and cross geographical borders if you want to participate in the European cups. The CEV organises three international competitions for the men's teams as well as for the women.
Champions LeagueWikipedia article - CEV pageThe most important European club competition is the Champions League, in which evivo Düren could collect precious experiences which helped them becoming a German top team. After a preliminary round with six groups at four teams, there are two playoff rounds with home and away matches followed by the Final Four tournament at which the ranks one to four are determined. The VfB Friedrichshafen - being the only German team in last year's competition - is now accompanied by Generali Haching in 2010/11. The second team of the Bundesliga plays in group A and faces CSKA Sofia from Bulgaria, the Russian representative Zenit Kazan and the French of AS Cannes. Friedrichshafen has to compete with the Italian team Trentino BetClic, the Romanian champion Remat Zalău and the Polish of PGE Skra Bełchatów.
CEV CupWikipedia article - CEV pageThe CEV Cup, which followed the former Top Teams Cup, is the second ranked competition in European club volleyball. After several knockout rounds with home and away matches and a "challenge round", in which the teams are confronted with failed participants of the Champions League, the winner is determined in the semifinal and final matches. In the season 2010/11 Germany has two participants both in the women's and men's competition. Against Topvolley Precura Antwerpen, the third-ranked team of last year's season in Belgium, and the Romanian club Dinamo Bucharest, evivo Düren won the "golden set" after losing 2:3 abroad and winning the home match. In the quarterfinal at the 5th and 12th of January, Düren faces the Polish top team Resovia Rzeszow. The SCC Berlin celebrated two clear victories against the Romanian club Tomis Constanţa, but then they were defeated by Rzeszow (2:3 abroad, 1:3 home) and thus missed a German duel versus Düren. The two female Bundesliga teams both have to play their away match first. The current champion Rote Raben Vilsbiburg bet Stiinta Bacău from Romania in the first round with 3:2 (A) and 3:0 (H) and now faces the club of the Spanish island Menorca. The German cup-winner Dresdner SC was successful against Asterix Kieldrecht from Belgium in straight sets and now competes with Dinamo Krasnodar from the Krim peninsula. Challenge CupWikipedia article - CEV pageThe third European competition is the Challenge Cup, which was called CEV Cup until 2007. The supporters of evivo Düren remember the season 2004/05 with the tournament in their own arena and the journey to Lille. The new mode is similar to the new CEV Cup and there are connections between the two competitions. The three German participants in the season 2010/11 entered the competition with away matches in the second round. After playing ten sets against Sparkasse Hartberg from Austria, the male team TV Rottenburg won the golden set with 17:15. In the next round, Rottenburg also used this decisive set versus the Czech from Ostrava. In the round of 16, they have to travel to Fakel Novy Urengoi in Western Sibiria. In the women's tournament, the 1. VC Wiesbaden advanced directly to the round of 16 after two clear wins against Iraklis Thessaloniki. The Wiesbaden girls will play against the winner of the match Vizura Beograd versus VDK Gent. The Schweriner SC bet the Croatian team ZOK Rijeka with 3:0 two times and now faces Kieldrecht, which was defeated by Dresden in the CEV Cup. Last edit of this page on
