You don't need to know anything as long as you know where you can find the necessary information. That is the argument of people who can't or don't want to keep anything in mind.
The internet is an important source of information today. But as there are as many people as pages in the WWW, you quickly loose the overview. Very helpful is a central portal which provides information in a well arranged and compact way.

Wikipedia One of the best sources is the free online encyclopedia Wikipedia.
The German version of the Wikipedia, which exists since May 2001, consist of more than 1,000,000 articles about every topic. The English "original" has even more than 3,000,000 articles. The whole content of the Wikipedia is available under the Creative Commons license and the GFDL (GNU Free Document License).

The pages which are mentioned in the following texts can be reached by clicking on the (W).

The wiki concept enables a very dynamic structure. The articles can be amended, edited and commented by every user. Everybody can supply his knowledge.
The quality of the content is improved by the decentral organisation. The articles are under current control. All edits are documented. Sabotage can be reverted at once. In May 2008, the German Wikipedia introduced the sighted versions as a protection against vandalism. (W). Articles which don't fulfill the requirements of an encyclopedia (because the topic is inappropriate etc.) or infringe a copyright, can be deleted.
Independent studies have shown that the Wikipedia is a serious competitor for classic encyclopedias (e.g. the Encyclopedia Britannica).

On my website MSchnitzler2000 the search is really easy. With the search form in the right column you can directly search the Wikipedia. You can also address an article by typing http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/ and the name of the article.

Every registered user of the Wikipedia has a user page on which he can present himself. You find my own user page at User:MSchnitzler2000 (W). There you can also see my own contributions (W), which are counted and statistically evaluated by the edit counter.
Wikipedia

Everybody can easily contribute to the Wikipedia.
On the main page (W) you see the most important content at one glance. Besides general information and the recent news you find today's featured article. It belongs to the list of featured articles (W) with top quality. A second list collects good articles (W).

Of course not every (new) article can be good or excellent at once. But we all wish that the articles have a certain quality (W) and meet some basic standards.

The most important links are arranged next to the article.
With a click on edit the edit window is opened. Here you can edit the text. When you are ready with your modifications, you should write a short summary for the other users. The option "minor edit" should be activated if you only amended orthography or similar things. Important for all editors is the compliance of the copyright (W)! Furthermore a NPOV (W) (neutral point of view) should be maintained.

With a click on watch page you can add the article to your personal watch list (W). There the most recent edit is shown. Behind the name of the user, the summary is shown (if it exists). Minor edits are marked with a M. A chronological list of all recent edits can be followed under "recent changes" (W).
Every article has an adherent discussion page (W). User can write comments or questions about the topic there. The "page history" (W) offers a list of all edits of the distinct article.

If you want to write an article, but you don't have an idea for a topic, you may find some inspiration on the following pages.
  • Requested articles (W) - missing, but requested articles are listed here
  • Cleanup (W) - these articles need some revision
  • Peer review (W) - the articles get the finishing touch here
  • Free sources (public domain) for texts (W) and pictures (W)
The following devices can be used for writing articles.
  • Infoboxes (W) - boxes with compact information
  • Templates (W) - for inclusion of information
  • Templates message (W) - disambiguation, deletion proposal, current data etc.
  • Variables (W) - date, time, page name etc.
  • Special characters (W) - which are not on the keyboard
  • Tables (W) - for the compact display of complex information
  • Colours (W) - for optical improvement
  • Persondata (W) - for biographical articles
  • Inline templates linking country articles (W) - for tables
The complete article should then find its place within the Wikipedia. There are some devices for this task, too.
  • Portals (W)- thematic overview
  • Categorization (W) - systematic classification on several levels
  • Interwiki (W) und Internationalisation (W) - links to other wiki projects and Wikipedias in other languages (W)
An article which is complete with regard to content and linguistically perfect can even become better when you illustrate it with photos and graphics. The material can be found on the above mentioned PD sources or in the Wikimedia Commons, a central media database, in which multimedia content for all wiki projects is saved.

The users cannot only read, amend and edit existing articles, but also comment on and rate them. The templates for cleanup (W) are available for this purpose. Maybe you find an article, which deserves an award as featured or good article …

During the last years, several of the Wikipedia were founded.
